Dental Nurse Sedation Course

dental nurse sedation course

Our accredited Dental Nurse Sedation Course is suitable for all members of the dental team who carry out sedation or assist in the care of sedated patients.

Starting out in Sedation? Our blended online / face to face course is designed to train Dental Nurses in Sedation to be an appropriate second person and assist with the procedure.

So what do you need to do to be a “Dental Sedation Nurse”?

  1. Go on a a STAC / RCSEng accredited dental nurse sedation course like ours
  2. Carry out a minimum of 20 assessed mentored cases in practice
  3. Then be able to work independently!
  4. Carry out 12 hours minimum sedation CPD every cycle
  5. Carry out Immediate Life Support training or equivalent every 12 months.

The Dental Sedation Nurse is a crucial part of the team, involved with all aspects of dental sedation, apart from administering drugs.

You can help with assessments, consent, setting up the clinic, cannulate the patient for IV sedation, monitor the patient, deal with complications, recover and help with discharging the patient.

To break it down:

The course

Our course is designed to give you all the core theory knowledge you need, combined with a practical face to face where you can practice assessments, cannulation and medical emergencies. Booking is all online and we operate courses throughout the year.

The online training is the equivalent of 7 hours and there are quizzes throughout to assess your knowledge.

We can also do an in-house course for a minimum of 4 delegates.

You get a certificate for the online part and the face to face part.

Once completed, you can then move onto mentored cases.

Mentoring

We can help you find an accredited mentor, or perhaps you have one already in your practice, an experienced and fully sedation trained dentist or doctor.

There always has to be a minimum of 2 qualified sedation trained personnel in the room when the dentist is doing the sedation, so when you are being mentored, it cant just be you and the dentist mentoring you.

A minimum of 20 cases are required to achieve competency to be a sedation trained dental nurse. We will provide you with all the paperwork to carry out 20 assessed cases. Every part of the sedation experience needs to be assessed.

After those 20 cases are complete and your mentor is satisfied, we can sign you off if required.

So you need refresher training or CPD in sedation?

If you are a sedation qualified dental nurse you need to do:

  • 12 hours vCPD every 5 years
  • Immediate life support training every 12 months.

We can help with all of that.

On our website we have some free CPD modules like assessments and managing complications and we are adding new modules regularly.

If you haven’t done sedation for a while you may want to join us for a refresher day, to get back up to speed.

The IACSD standards say that we need to be doing sedation regularly to justify keeping doing it, and keeping skills up to date is crucial to provide the care needed for a sedation trained dental nurse. Our refresher day gives you 7 hours of vCPD and will get you back on track.

Immediate Life Support

We carry out our own life support training in sedation and details are on our website. We can host a course or come to your practice.

We also have a list of ILS trainers we know and trust who can help across the country.
