“In House” STAC Accredited IV Sedation course
"In House" IV Sedation Training for Dentists and Dental Nurses
Instead of waiting till a scheduled course, why don’t we come to you?
Please find below some basic information about our course that can delivered “in house”, tailored to your needs.
All training courses for new starters in Dental Sedation have to be accredited with the Sedation Teachers Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Surgeons England (STAC).
Mellow Dental is the STAC / Royal College of Surgeons accredited training organisation for your course.
Traintosedate.co.uk is the sedation learning platform that will be used for the online core theory. Traintosedate is a collaboration between Mellow Dental and UKSedation.
All of our course trainers are themselves STAC / RCSEng accredited. Confirmation of the accreditation status of training courses and trainers can be found at
All of our dentist trainers are also STAC RCSEng approved mentors, having demonstrated enough clinical experience to be able to train others and deem them competent to carry out IV Sedation or be the second appropriate person e.g Dental Nurse.

Audience
To carry out IV sedation in a dental setting, the dentist who does the dentistry and the sedation at the same time requires a “second appropriate person” in the room at all times. This is traditionally the dental nurse.
If the trained sedationist is a “dedicated” sedationist, I.e not involved in the dentistry, a sedation trained nurse is not required, but we do recommend some knowledge, especially sedation related complications.
All team members in the surgery require Immediate Life Support Training refreshed every year.
This course is designed for Dentists who wish to carry out simple single drug IV Sedation on their patients.
The same curriculum is used for Dental Nurses or other qualified Dental Health Professionals who wish to act as the “second appropriate person”.
Our course curriculum is mapped against the learning outcomes as laid out by the IACSD standards
Training pathway
As per the IACSD standards 2020, all sedation trained personnel require at least 20 cases mentored before carrying out sedation independently.
Our course is in two sections.
- 7 hours core theory online
- One day face to face practical day.
After that is completed we will provide the necessary assessment and competency forms to be filled in by your mentor for each case.
Mentoring or cases are not included as part of the course, they have to be sourced independently, starting after the theory 2 part course is complete.
We can provide mentoring in your workplace under a separate arrangement, or you can visit the Traintosedate website to find a mentor close to you. You can also contact STAC for a list of accredited mentors at [email protected].
Using an accredited mentor is preferred as they would have had to go through a process to explain what assessment methods they are using, like “direct observation of procedural skills”.
We normally recommend a period of 18 months to complete your mentoring. If it is longer than that it may be sensible to undertake a refresher course and /or attend a cannulation training day.
After mentoring
Once at least 20 cases are completed, if the mentor deems you competent and you have a paper trail of assessments to prove competency is all aspects, then it’s time to be signed off.
Your accredited mentor can independently sign you off but if you would like certification then you can contact us for a final telephone review where we go over a few cases and test your knowledge. Ed can then issue on official certificate. There is a £165 charge for this (current as of April 2025).
Fees and process
To book us for training, here is the process.
- Find a date that is suitable for face to face training. This needs to be at least four weeks from the date the invoice gets paid.
- We will send you a Docusign contract and an invoice for the fees.
- There is a minimum fee of £2250, which is training for up to four delegates. If there are any more delegates they are charged at £495 for dental nurses and £950 for dentists.
- The fees can be paid by BACS or all major credit / debit cards
- Once paid, we will ask for the names and email addresses of all the delegates.
- We will write to them with access details to the learning platform www.traintosedate.co.uk
- The delegates carry out all the learning tasks online before the face to face day.
- We attend your venue on the agreed day to carry out the face to face training. This covers aspects like assessments, Monitoring, cannulation (on manikins) and sedation related airway complications.
All delegates have continued access to the Traintosedate core theory for the websites lifetime so they can always refer back to that in the future.
The website also has other free vCPD as well as accredited training in Inhalation Sedation.
There is also a “Compliance Builder” to assist you to making sure your practice is CQC compliant with regards to sedation provision.
We will update you as time goes on about new courses and you can always get in touch with us through the website www.traintosedate.co.uk
